2020 Season Update
Greetings swim families,
First, I want to send each of our Woodneath families wellness, both physical and mental, as we continue to move forward into these unchartered waters.
Second, I am aware this email is long…but hopefully you have more time that normal to read it through to the end.:)
I want to update you on registration and season plans based on most recent community updates.
It is so difficult in this environment to make any informed decisions day by day. So, my goal is to explain what parameters dictate our upcoming season, and potential adjustments we are ready to make based on any directives we are under as the season approaches. I also feel getting accurate information is difficult, so I want to provide you with as much information as possible so hopefully the idea of summer swim potential is a source of hope and not added worry to your family.
It is important to note that the 2020 season schedule has currently not changed. HOWEVER, we are keenly aware of the many factors listed below that will likely affect us in the weeks to come, and we plan to make adjustments in ALL aspects of the season, including meet schedule, volunteer points, and registration details. Our goal will be to allow families the ability to swim as much as possible this season. We are trying to foresee the possibilities, while adjusting to the current safety needs of the community.
We will MOVE registration dates to correspond with the above information, and it will most likely be the last two weeks of May, NOT starting BEFORE MAY 18.
**PLEASE NOTE the turnaround for registration, once announced, will be very short. This will include registration, volunteer opportunities, and spirit wear. We WILL send out an email prior to verify new registration dates. Information will also be updated on our website, www.woodneathswim.swimtopia.com as well. Please look there for commonly asked questions regarding the season.
I. Governances and and most current UPDATES
Woodneath Farms Swim Team is part of the 11-team Northland Swim Conference, under the umbrella of Missouri Valley (LSC- local swimming chapter) of USA Swimming. We ultimately follow all rules and regulations of USA Swimming.
-Northland Conference is determined to proceed if possible and has submitted the sanction to USA Swimming for our posted meet schedule. We met last week and decided NOT to change any currently scheduled meets until we have more information and direction from USA Swimming.
-Discussion from the Conference meeting included some potential changes for the season, which included the following topics:
1. Move the entire season BACK one week INCLUDING CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS. This would make our first home meet 6/11 and Conference Championships July 27-29(30).
2.Move the entire season back one week, and move the first meet of the year to the last week prior to the Conference meet July 27-29 (30).
3.Move any missed meets to make up later in the season to a mutually acceptable date (e.g. like a rainout meet).
4.Swim whatever practice and meet season we can when we are allowed to get into pools and not worry about Conference Championship this season.
-USA Swimming has recently indicated that it is not allowing any sanctioned events (meets etc.) until after 5/31/20. This does not yet impact our schedule because our normal meet schedule is later than this date. USA Swimming is monitoring details as well and will determine any extensions on 5/15/20.
-As of April 6, 2020: First Residential plans to have the Woodneath Farms pool full and functionally ready to open prior to Memorial Weekend for normal operation. HOWEVER, the most recent memo suggests they will operate under the guidance of the KS Department of Health because MO Department of Health has no declared guidance. Kansas guidelines allow for a maximum of 10 people inside the fence at a time. The HOA wants to figure out a way to monitor this, and thus could delay opening the pool until a more reasonable number is allowed. At current guidelines, we would be likely unable to hold practices until the social distancing guidelines are lessened to closer to 50.
Woodneath Farms pool is located in Kansas City, MO. Therefore, it is under the jurisdiction of both Kansas City and Clay County Health Departments. Clay County is under MO Department of Health. We do know that it is unlikely that Covid-19 can survive in chlorinated water (per CDC). This will be great news if the social distancing piece also relaxes!
The Clay County Health Department inspects and certifies pools are safe for use each year. There is some concern about delays in the inspection process this year given the short turnaround, but I am less concerned about this for us specifically. It is more a concern for each pool in the Conference to be open for meets in time for the currently set schedule.
Based on all of this, we will be closely watching what USA Swimming, local government mandates, and HOA guidelines to reassess as needed.
Our next Northland Conference Meeting is May 11, 2020. Any season changes will be discussed and voted on with updated information regarding when the opening phases begin.
I am attaching a couple of updates from USA Swimming for anyone who would like additional information. These were current this week. https://swimswam.com/usa-swimming-wont-sanction-meets-through-at-least-may-31st/
USA Swimming is continuing all official training as usual, EXCEPT, the clinics will occur virtually. THEREFORE, you can take all Stroke and Turn or Starter clinics that are scheduled on the MV website online for free during a ZOOM clinic that will be less than two hours…FOR FREE! If you need a seasonal clinic or you are thinking about becoming an official this summer to fulfill family volunteer obligations, you can attend any clinic that is established on MV Swimming website, and it will count for the 2020 season. You won’t be out anything except 1 ½ hours of time and you will be smarter afterward. Win-Win! You are also able to take a stroke and turn clinic anytime on USA Swimming website as well for a $30 fee.
Please email me for more information about becoming an official if you are interested. Also, I will send out an email with dates, times, and ZOOM meeting information for Officials to satisfy your annual clinic for free while you are quarantined! Fun all around to be had! You are also able to take/retake your specified exam online (for free) starting May 1, 2020. I would encourage you to complete these items while under stay-at-home orders are in place so we aren’t inundated with things after 5/15/20, when we are trying to re-enter society.
Lastly, we will likely send out a survey in the coming week about your commitment to swimming this summer under various circumstances. Please consider filling it out according to your current status. We appreciate your time on this! It will help us meet the needs of the families.
Overall, I want to thank you for reading this to the end, and send good vibes for summer swim! Please know that I am so proud so of our Woodneath Farms families! We will do whatever we can to make the season work, and I can’t wait for the ability to see the kids swim again!
